» Perth Apprentice Joiner Shortlisted for James Birnie Award for Craft Excellence

Birnie AwardA Perth apprentice joiner has recently been shortlisted for the prestigious national James Birnie Award for Craft Excellence. Twenty eight year old Fraser Anderson initially started his career within the forces and, on leaving, completed a course at Perth College UHI under a scholarship provided by leading local construction firm Meldrum Property and Design Services (a sister company of McLeod Glaziers). Impressed by his work ethic and skills during a work placement programme, Fraser is currently employed by Meldrum whilst continuing studies at Perth College UHI.

The James Birnie Award for Craft Excellence (Apprentice of the Year) is organised by the Scottish Building and Training Apprenticeship Council and is now in its sixteenth year. The prestigious award recognises the talents of Scotland’s traditional craft apprentices undertaking any of the four year SVQ level 3 programmes.

Commenting on his shortlisted nomination, Fraser said “It’s been quite a change from a life in the forces to working in the commercial world and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the transition. I’m confident that this is the career for me and I’ve worked hard to get to this stage. The support from everyone has been fantastic and has helped mature me into this new role”.

Fraser was nominated for the award by his tutors at Perth College UHI and the CITB. Donald Kemp of Perth College UHI said: “Fraser started in the National Progression Awards (NPA) in October 2013 and immediately showed a real aptitude for carpentry and joinery through his hand skills but also had a disciplined mind when it came to theory elements. We are very proud of Fraser’s achievements and know he will continue to impress”.

Derek Petterson, Managing Director of Meldrums, said: “The company is delighted on Fraser’s nomination for this prestigious award.   He has impressed us greatly from initially meeting him at scholarship stage and he has gained the respect of his colleagues in the work environment due to his focus and ability.  I personally understand the challenges on moving from a forces lifestyle to the commercial world and he has adapted to this change admirably”

The winner of the award will be announced on 9th December at a ceremony held in the Scottish Parliament.
